[Tarrafal/Assomada 2011-01-27] In February over 200 Capeverdean children and youths will create a photographic art piece together with the Austrian photographer Lukas M. Hueller and Juliane R. Hauser. The artistic and educational project called “The Play” will be realized in Tarrafal by The Human Rights Project in cooperation with Delta Cultura Cabo Verde. “The Play” is a photographic interpretation of Article 31 of The Convention on the Rights of the Child and is inspired by Pieter Bruegel‘s painting “children’s play“. The idea is to reflect a mirror on society as seen through children’s eyes. Over 200 children and youths, mostly members of Delta Cultura Cabo Verde,  the football school from Chão Bom and ICCA Assomada, will create and show their own scenes of playing in the Capeverdean culture and thus create a “real-life” creole interpretation of Pieter Bruegel’s painting. Article 31 of The Convention on the Rights of the Child (adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations, November 29, 1989) states:

1. Parties recognize the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts.
2. Parties shall respect and promote the right of the child to participate fully in cultural and artistic life and shall encourage the provision of appropriate and equal opportunities for cultural, artistic, recreational and leisure activities.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published a study in 2006 which states that

“free and unstructured play is healthy and – in fact – essential for helping children reach important social, emotional and cognitive developmental milestones as well as helping them manage stress and become resilient”.

Both, The Human Rights Project and Delta Cultura Cabo Verde, believe in the power of creativity, culture and play as an essential and important part of personal development and our society as a whole. “Since the information revolution began, information is now accessible to everyone, everywhere and at every time. This changes our society dramatically because it is no longer knowledge which is the most important commodity, but creativity and discrete thinking.” Miliana Soares Moreno from Delta Cultura explains, “This is why we are proud to cooperate with The Human Rights Project here in Cabo Verde to help realize this wonderful project.” The extraordinariness of Hueller’s and Hauser’s work is that they compose “gigapixel photos”, which means that technically scene by scene is photographed from one point of view and then all of the photos are stitched together afterwards into one large image with the help of a special digital program. The result of the project, together with realizations in other continents are to be presented in 2014, the year of the 25th anniversary of the Convention on the Children Rights and the year of the Football World Cup in Brazil, and football being one of the most popular ways of play on our planet.
